Culture Matters

CultureMatters is a web-based training program for primary care providers on teaching patients with chronic pain to use cognitive-behavioral pain management techniques to help manage their pain. As the name implies, CultureMatters emphasizes cultural competence in working with patients with chronic pain. It advances a framework to conceptualize culture in the service of culturally tailoring cognitive-behavioral techniques. Used in conjunction with the core techniques addressed in the training (breathing, imagery, distraction, values-based action, and cognitive approaches), this framework is intended to be applicable to patients from diverse cultures. Native American Indian cultures are presented as illustrative examples along with audio-visual case scenarios.
